hedshot1943 . . . I was born in a small town in Vermont.
I am the oldest of three girls.

Much of the year we lived at my grandparents hotel, the Barrows House, in Dorset, Vermont.

When the hotel was closed for the winter Grampa taught us to play “mountain music” sitting at the white linen covered tables in the big dining room tapping gently with knives on glasses filled with water.

I spent my days roaming, fishing, building forts in the woods and performing plays with my best friend and my cousin for anyone who would watch.

I collected crooked twigs from apple trees, pale blue birds’ eggs dropped from branches too high to reach, “good luck” rocks (the kind with a white band running all the way around), butterfly wings and arranged them just so in white owl cigar boxes my grandfather gave me when he had smoked the last smoke in the box.

2016 . . . Nostalgia, a yearning or longing for a place or time . . . my sisters and I reminisce about our magical childhood and they remind me that I am still roaming, playing music ( only now I am teaching myself the ukulele) collecting treasures,
arranging them in boxes or as mixed media sculptures or collages which more often than not add my own special twist to memories, events and those frustrations, yearnings, wishes and hopes we all have.

SUSAN B WOOD holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University as well as degrees from Green Mountain College in Vermont and New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

She has formerly held the positions of CEO of the Mendocino Art Center in California;

Director of Education and Programs at the American Craft Museum in New York City and

Director of Greenwich House Pottery at Greenwich House Settlement also in New York City.

Susan has served as an evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, an accrediting institution and on the Boards of Directors of numerous national art educational centers.

Susan has recently returned to the Mendocino coast to resume her full time studio work after spending time first in Florida, and most recently Vermont, designing several properties for use as artists’ living and work spaces.

During her time away from California Susan also received two unique opportunities to travel.
She was awarded a position as an International Exchange Artist in Indonesia on the island of
Java; living and working in the compound of two internationally known batik artists, and she traveled in China and Mongolia where she lived during the winter with a family of nomads.

Many remember Susan’s popular hand painted velvet clothing and silk screened home accessories lines, “SBW:fine textiles” which were produced on the Mendocino Coast and marketed nationally.

I am happy as a clam, back in Mendocino, living in a 700 square foot yurt on a beautiful piece of property, seeing good friends, meeting many new folks and creating lots of new art work.

Looking forward to meeting and seeing you all soon.
